The new mood - Womenswear Autumn 12

Ian Wright

The old phrase ‘the devil is in the detail’ has rarely been more true for womenswear than it is for autumn 12.

The old phrase ‘the devil is in the detail’ has rarely been more true for womenswear than it is for autumn 12. At every turn the richness and depth of design comes through, some styles are distinct departures from previous seasons, others more subtle moves on. It’s this love of texture, embellishment, cut and finish that’s captured hearts and minds, ours included, as you’ll see.

Attention to fabrication is at the centre of so much of the good womenswear, the textural quality of the key materials set off against each other in a celebration of the bold way designers have used textiles this season.

Similarly, eveningwear has been put under the microscope, with embellishment – whether sequins, beading or glitter – used in a more concentrated or dramatic way, blending opulence with elegance.

We’ve also pulled together the season’s 18 essential trends, confirmed by Drapers’ recent trip to Who’s Next Prêt-à-Porter. Whether you’re partial to polka dots, rusty tones or three-dimensional textures, the guide’s packed with the key trends, brands and pieces to buy now as we summarise autumn 12 down to the last detail.
