Uniqlo’s womenswear collection for autumn 10 largely mirrors many of the trends seen in menswear. Where the men’s side of the business exhibits flannel shirts, the women’s collection converts the same fabrication into a smock dress silhouette.
Both denim and knitwear are key once again, but for women a silver lacquered finish on denim stands out.
A more formal-inspired capsule collection plays with grey tones and tailoring, with a long-line bouclé jacket and pencil-thin black belt adding a sophisticated touch. However, the collection then makes a sudden lurch into a sportswear direction with snowboots, thermal leggings, brightly coloured quilted gilets and acid-wash denim, all of which jars slightly with the rest of the offer.

Right for the market?
Denim and knitwear once again impresses but Uniqlo focuses too heavily on trend-led items than the basics it is traditionally known for. There is no clear synergy between one story and the next.
Although just a microcosm of what will be in store - and when merchandised on the shopfloor it may look better - it has a confused feel which works against Uniqlo’s functional and minimal message.
