For any directional indies looking for something different, this Danish womenswear label could be the answer.
Independent retailers may be cutting back on their travel budgets for international trade shows, but if you’re a contemporary womenswear retailer looking for something different, it may be worth squeezing out some cash for a trip to Copenhagen Fashion Week next season.
As part of the spring 10 edition, contemporary shows CPH Vision and Gallery played host to some inspirational brands, including Designers Remix Collection. The Danish brand has about 25 stockists in the UK, including Harvey Nichols and Flannels, but at 200 pieces (including footwear and accessories), the spring 10 range is big enough for retailers to cherry pick the pieces that suit them.
The collection offers a contradiction of styles, marrying feminine silhouettes with more masculine tailoring. On the one hand, there are delicate, feminine dresses in dusty tones of peach and lilac – offset by flashes of neon sorbet and pale purple – draped skirts and tops, and softly tailored trousers.
One the other hand there are structured jackets and dresses, with a heavy focus on the shoulders, be it pagoda-style, off-the-shoulder dresses, heavy folds or pleated ruffles. Tulip is a key shape for skirts and dresses, while body-conscious dresses are softened by draped sleeves. Autumn 09’s origami shapes also feature for spring 10 on separates.
Texture is key, with metal rivets on leather jackets contrasting against softer cotton silks and recycled polyester for the eco-conscious buyer.
Footwear and accessories are equally eclectic, with neon copper heels with lime leather details, gladiator sandals, pretty ballerina flats and fringed suede boots among the footwear styles. In accessories, shiny leather totes in pale apricot and brown straps stand out, while sturdy leather belts with exposed copper zips balance femininity with a harder, more masculine edge.
Creative director Charlotte Eskildsen says a wild orchid inspired the collection. “The look is delicate, enigmatic and fiercely feminine – like a black orchid. I love the fragility of a flower mixed with a bit of post-apocalyptic punk,” she explains. “The key pieces for me are the white studded leather jacket, dusty printed jeans, hand-painted silk dresses and cut-out origami pieces.”
Sales for the year to June 30 are up 17% on the previous year. The brand will enter the Australian and New Zealand markets from spring 10, and already has stockists in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain, Switzerland and the US.
Prices start at £17.50 for T-shirts and go up to £161.50 on outerwear.
