Christmas sales slowest for three years

This Christmas has been one of the toughest I can remember and it feels like the Sales are bigger and better (well better for the consumer at least) than ever at the moment. I'd like to know if independents have suffered as much as the high street or if shoppers are still spending on "something different" though. I hope interest rates get cut this week but I reckon it will take quite a long time for the effect to filter through now if they do. Shopper mood is definitely nervous and that wont go away straight away whatever happens.
