Fashion at John Lewis up against 'anaemic' market

If John Lewis wants a strong private label offering they need strong own brand skills within top and middle management. A home wear director doesn’t have the same skill set required for clothing. A laptop buyer doesn’t have the same skill set to buy menswear. Branded buying and own brand development are two very different skill sets. John Lewis needs traditional skills of product development, sourcing, supplier management, costing, eye for product and commercial reality within their heirarchy. Whilst the ambition is correct to grow own brand, it won’t be achieved with the current management and structure. The mismanagement from the current heads of and directors within fashion is alienating both private label suppliers and brands. An example of who is doing this well is Next, with a strong own label, and superb brand acquisition management. Brands are turning more to the likes of Next to make up for John Lewis’s mismanagement. John Lewis has major structural, cultural and institutionalised challenges.
