Austin Reed, The Centre MK

Shopping here is about promotions and more promotions, not all of which are crystal clear.

Product 6

Austin Reed does the job of serving the older and more refined gentleman who wants something classic but better quality than Bhs. The emphasis is, of course, on tailoring and in terms of suit fabric choice, this store has the broadest, from black and grey to navy and varying pinstripe widths. Formal shirt choice beats TM Lewin too. The fits are mainstream. Countrywear and smart casualwear make up the rest of the offer, with a version of the Barbour jacket, chino trousers and natural knits.

Experience 4

A bridge-level tailoring chain should make every effort to service all of the customers that cross its threshold but no help was forthcoming in this branch. That said, the layout and merchandising are simple so it is easy to navigate through casualwear at the front of the store to suits and shirts. A Help For Heroes collection box on the counter is a nice touch for the older demographic.

Value 5

Austin Reed trades almost exclusively on a promotional BOGOF-type strategy. Without it prices are high but labels flagging up the use of British and Italian fabrics help explain the positioning. Checked shirts come in at £59 and chinos are £69. Austin Reed wins the award for the most convoluted promotion: 20% off for a year when you join the Q Club for £275 plus a half price bespoke suit. Clarity is best when it comes to price.
