Small businesses can struggle to keep up with expectations of payments technology, and the slick offerings of the major retailers just adds to the pressure. There is a perception among some that the smaller retailer is unlikely to keep up with the pace of change. But is this really true? To gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing smaller retailers Elavon conducted research with existing customers throughout the UK and Ireland.
The study found that 78% of retailers said that accepting cards is critical to their business and that new payment technology is of great interest to them. However, although there is an appetite for new technology, almost half said they felt nervous about investing in it unless they were clear on the business benefits. Put simply, they needed to be confident that technology would help them understand their customer better, as well as accelerate their business potential.
