Strong start fuels Zalando’s UK hopes

Clothing and footwear etailer Zalando has outlined ambitions to become a significant player in the UK online arena, taking on the likes of Asos and Amazon.

Speaking exclusively to Drapers, the etailer’s Nordic and UK regional head Michael Lindskog said German-based Zalando, which launched in the UK just over a year ago, had seen “strong growth”, particularly in footwear and accessories.

He said: “The UK footwear and apparel market is one of the most competitive in Europe. There are several key competitors both in terms of pure-play online and those bricks-and-mortar retailers with an online presence.”

Zalando is hoping its focus on customer service – it offers free shipping and returns and a free customer service hotline – along with its offer of more than 1,000 brands – will help boost UK growth. Brands available on the website include denim brand Diesel and Danish womenswear brand Vero Moda.

Earlier this year, Zalando appointed former Kurt Geiger head of men’s buying Neil Steptoe as senior buyer.

  • Not sure who the sales director of the footwear brand is but in my dealings with them in Europe they buy as any other business would buy, they do buy in volume but they sell in volume too, and at full price. I for one am looking forward to increasing business with them in the UK.

  • I have been dealing with Zalando through their German team for 2 years now, if they get the UK business to the same level as their other European sites they will be serious competition for the likes of ASOS and with ASOS adding more and more own label product Zalando could be the Internet retailer of choice for brands like mine.
