The fashion retail app timeline: a look back at who's done what

As Marks & Spencer prepares to launch its mobile shopping app in the coming weeks - with barcode scanning, location and nearest store direction functions - Drapers takes a look at some of the apps that have paved the way in fashion retail.

May 2012 - Online marketplace etailer eBay’s introduces colour match app
Key features: A function to its shopping app that lets consumers search for items that match colour and pattern in photographs

December 2011 - Menswear brand Pretty Green invests in payment system Simply Tap, operated by the Mobile Money Network
Key features: App allows its customers to save their payment details and delivery address and then simply tap in a short code to speed the sales and delivery process

November 2011 - British designer Henry Holland releases a smart phone app
Key features: The app turned the December issue of InStyle UK into a moving catwalk

November 2011 - Lingerie etailer Figleaves launches an Underground advertising campaign which displayed the logo of the app, SaveMe4Later.
Key features: Above ground, the app updates product information, pricing and links ready for offline use

October 2011 - New Look launches a new iPhone and iPod touch application
Key features: Provides users with fashion content and style advice

August 2011 - Arcadia-owned TopShop reveals games app
Key features: Built for for students, players can select which rewards and exclusive offers they wish to sign up for when within a 500 mile radius of a Topshop store

May 2011 - Discount designer etailer the Outnet.com launches first iPhone app
Key features: Rewards users with credit for introducing friends to the site. The app, known as StyleCred, allows users to share looks with friends and earn a £20 credit every time a friend new to the Outnet shops there for the first time

May 2011 - Harrods launches app
Key features: GPS-assisted and offers users a guide to in-store events, new product launches and special offers, alongside an interactive store guide

March 2011 - Designer discount etailer BrandAlley reveals iPhone app
Key features: The video, part of BrandAlley’s The Possibilities are Endless advertising campaign, features a girl whose look constantly changes as she stands behind a wall of iPads and iPhones

March 2011 - French Connection launches transactional iPhone app
Key features: Customers can consult a ‘look book’ for outfit combinations. Integration with Facebook and Twitter allows them to communicate about items showcased

August 2010 - Swedish young fashion chain H&M launches app before a transactional website
Key features: The app is a 3D fashion gallery that allows users to click through to H&M’s campaign shots. A “my wishlist” area links to Facebook to allow users to share their favourite pieces with their friends

August 2010 - Tesco launches a transactional app on mainstream handset Nokia Ovi Store
Key features: Shoppers can browse a full store and update their shopping list

July 2010 - Net-a-Porter announces magazine app for the iPad
Key features: Customers can shop complete looks direct from shoots in the magazine and share product suggestions as well as view video content

June 2009 - Oasis is the first fashion retailer to launch an iPhone app
