A total removal of FCUK is a triumph to behold - trade up to quality classics here.
There are two clear directions for the French Connection man this season - stylish fashion or a return to sophisticated classics. Coats are outstanding and are led by a belted black wool overcoat and quilted jackets. Elsewhere, cashmere cardigans are toasty warm and a large checked shirt ensures the mainstream trend box is ticked.
The smallest menswear department Drapers visited actually works the hardest to deliver a really well-rounded autumn offer. Merchandising is both by outfit or by colour or by category where relevant - think jeans and coats - and enough space is left for the product to breathe. Staff were helpful without being overbearing.
As the Cheltenham store offers more of a premium shopping experience than some of French Connection’s other shops, this helps to justify some of the prices. Coats are best - a black wool number is worth £170 - but knitwear is confusing, with basic V-necks sitting next to hole-punched detail cardies, both priced at £55. Interlock polo shirts are outstanding at £25 thanks to their quality - Debenhams has some at the same price but at less than half the quality.
