Hit or miss: Clarks - 6/10

  • 119-121 Oxford Street

Pros

The windows clearly display the big trend stories of the season and it’s obvious what Clarks is backing: quilted (£90) and fake fur-lined (£110) leather ankle boots on women’s footwear and leather lace-up boots (£100) on men’s. The Sale sign on display is also quite discreet. The women’s footwear collection is placed at the entrance and is easy to navigate, with different styles grouped together making it easy to shop. The product is quite trend-led, with animal prints and ponyskin textures attracting a younger shopper, as well as offering the traditional Clarks consumer something fun. ‘As seen in…’ placards are also placed beside relevant pieces that have been featured in magazines. The men’s section downstairs is also segmented by style. It is the only store visited with a good selection of walking boots, priced between £110 and £120.

Cons

The interior is stark with white walls and harsh lighting. Campaign shots displayed throughout try to lift the mood, but the shopfit is tired, especially in comparison to Clarks’ new retail concept in other stores such as Westfield Stratford. The men’s area downstairs also feels claustrophobic.
