Hit or Miss: Footwear Autumn 14

In the final part of our seasonal high street survey, we put men’s and women’s footwear in the spotlight.

Shops on London’s Oxford Street are under scrutiny again for Drapers’ third and final instalment of Hit or Miss for autumn 14. This time attention turns to footwear.

The UK’s busiest shopping street offers a mixed bag of results. While all the stores visited tick the boxes on the key trends and styles for the season, a shortage of staff and lack of good customer service is the biggest bugbear.

Despite the warm October, ankle boots are still at the fore in women’s footwear. Autumn 14 trends, including cobalt blue and metallic detailing, are evident throughout. Brogues are still a safe bet for men, although the better styles have points of interest like patent finishes or ombré colouring to make them stand out.

The visited stores are divided into footwear-only and clothing multiples, and are scored based on their autumn 14 offers and in-store experience, including customer service, store layout and visual merchandising. Points for value consider the quality of the product compared with its pricing.
Shops were visited on October 23 and 24.
