Hit or miss: H&M - 21/30

A strong, if slightly small, collection of great trend-led product at attractive prices.

  • Upper Mall, The Harlequin

Product - 8

In the first third of this store, H&M nails autumn 12’s trends and adds its own twist to certain looks. Gorgeous corals, bright prints, pastels, jacquard prints, peplums and various textures (faux leather, lace, sequins and soft feathers – not seen anywhere else) are set against autumnal hues of burgundy, mustard and grey. Duffles, macs and faux leather-panelled biker jackets make up a solid outerwear offer. This comparatively small trend and design-led section leads shoppers to a larger sea of basics.

Value - 7

With a mid-season Sale on, shoppers can find pieces for £10, £7 and £4 with each price signposted above individual rails. But the full-price offer is also attractive, ensuring customers shop across H&M’s entire collection. Angora blend jumpers are only £19.99 and a cool, biker jacket with faux-leather panelling is a snip at £29.99. Pretty jacquard-print blouses are just £14.99 and coats start from £24.99.

Experience - 6

For the first 10 minutes, H&M offered the best experience in Watford. Soft corals, bright prints and pretty pastels against a shiny white interior give the warmest of welcomes, as does the attractive product, tidily merchandised into trend stories or categories. But the second two-thirds of the store is one big jumble sale. Still, the entrance draws you in and the bargain-hungry should stick around.
