Hit or miss: Karen Millen - 16/30

An appealing store with friendly staff, but the pricing is far too high and uncompetitive.

  • Upper Regent Crescent

Product: 5

Dresses are not surprisingly the main focus of Karen Millen’s offer. What it does best is the impressive variety of colours and styles, which provide a strong point of difference compared with its rivals.

Salmon-coloured pieces and animal prints are particularly praiseworthy. Styles vary from body-con to full-skirted, creating a decent range of options, although most lack enough innovation. Some more unexpected items such as red and black glitter-threaded trousers are highlights, along with neon greens and yellows on separates. Less impressive are some out-of-place coloured denim trousers with elasticated waistbands.

Value: 4

The first item just inside the door is a lovely metallic grey dress, heavily embellished, with a weighty price tag of
£350 to match. This seems odd when across the store other dresses are priced at around £160, including a great multicoloured shift dress with cut-out and mesh detailing, which is definitely worth its price tag. However, some items seem vastly overpriced, including a plain denim jacket for £140 that made a fellow shopper laugh out loud, and a T-shirt for £65 that looks no different to cheaper options at Next.

Experience: 7

The store itself is a delight, with friendly and helpful sales assistants. Attention has been paid to maintaining a
sense of space throughout the store, with slightly higher rails creating more floor space. The window display highlights key trends through the use of well-dressed mannequins and bold lettering on the window.
