Browsing Karen Millen, there’s a strong range of pieces that catch the eye, with bomber jackets, pleated skirts and fuzzy textures looking fashion-forward. Even more basic pieces, such as blouses and denim jeans, have value-added details such as lace panels or floral prints. Trends, including the colour orange, are presented differently to elsewhere, for example through biker jackets, while sporty knits seem ahead of the just-seen catwalk trend for spring 15. Prices are higher than Jigsaw or French Connection, but the level of detail in most garments is strong enough to justify it (printed jeans here are £99). The wide, open store is easy to browse and large campaign images show off key items. Changing rooms are particularly pleasant with carpeting and plush curtains.
Some more basic items, like a lyocell and polyester vest, are £75, which seems overpriced when similar fabric styles elsewhere are less than £50. Although many pieces are worth a little more because of a high level of detailing, starting prices in-store are higher than expected given target customers are younger than for competitors such as Jigsaw, for example.
