Hit or Miss: Marks & Spencer 7/10

Ground floor and first floor

Pros In terms of shopping environment, the women’s footwear department in this branch of M&S is a jewel in the retailer’s crown. It is huge, catering for all occasions and ages, from a fashion forward white leather peep-toe mule (£49.50) to lightweight wide-fit pumps (£25). There is a good size range on display across both the men’s and women’s sections. Staff are friendly and there is ample seating in the men’s area.

Cons The men’s footwear section is difficult to locate and much smaller than the women’s, meaning there is not as much choice. There could be more seating in the womenswear section given its vast size and there is no shop assistant on hand to help customers. Some styles are not good value for money compared with other retailers, for example men’s leather brogues at £59, when a pair of similar quality are £50 at Next. Likewise, women’s PU loafers are £29.50, whereas Next has a similar leather version for just £6.50 more.
