Hit or miss: Next - 7/10

  • 201-203 Oxford Street

Next AW14

Pros

Next’s store has one of the better mainstream window displays, with mannequins highlighting an orange and monochrome trend and everything clearly priced. Inside, the attention to trends continues, albeit interpreted in an accessible way for mainstream customers. Prints come in a variety of choices, such as different-length tops and skirts, while some pieces, like a woolly wrap coat, have a tag flagging up the ‘key fabric’. Dresses are in a range of styles, both long- and short-sleeved, offering something for every body shape. Next appeals to its target customer very well.

Cons

It feels a bit early for Next to be promoting Christmas, although signs and festive jumpers are in store. Some trends, such as a bubblegum pink theme for workwear, feel a little last season. Prices are higher than at M&S without the quality being noticeably better - an unlined polyester dress at £42 looks a bit shoddy in both fabric and construction.
