Hit or Miss: Next 8/10

Ground floor and first floor

Pros Once again, Next’s men’s footwear area comes up trumps. It is spacious, easy to navigate and decorated with homely rugs, which invite shoppers to take their time. There is more choice for men at Next than at any other store visited. Shoes are dotted around the store and priced competitively, with leather loafers starting at £40 and leather brogues for £50, £9 cheaper than a pair of similar quality at M&S. Staff are attentive. Next is one of few retailers visited, whether footwear specialists or clothing multiples, to offer half sizes. The women’s footwear area is tidy and easy to navigate, as similar styles are grouped together. Large price signs on each shelf make it easy for shoppers to select a style that suits their budget. The shop window is also inviting, filled with flowers and spring shades of lemon and white.

Cons The shop is too warm and needs the air conditioning switched on. While there is a good selection of styles for women, there is not as much choice as at New Look or Marks & Spencer.
