The Topman aesthetic is a clear counterpart to the Topshop woman and does not disappoint given Topshop’s much larger space in store. Young, vibrant pieces are on offer, as demonstrated in the suiting area which features tailored trousers in outlandish dogtooth checks, dandyish three-piece suits in bold tartans or Prince of Wales check, and colours including maroon and red. But there is also a wide offer of plainer grey and navy options, which again is where Topman excels, as although pieces like sweaters come in abstract paint stripes or cityscape prints, or anoraks in painterly camo, there are also pared-back plain options, meaning there is something for everyone. Prices are higher than H&M but are usually justified by better detailing. For example, a parka is £95 but has a detachable lining and concealed buttons.
Despite the impressive-looking autumn product, a crowded, messy Sale dominates the main floor and makes it hard to see the new-season collection. The store is hard to navigate because there is no obvious exit route. The majority of fits across all items such as trousers, jeans and suits are slim or skinny, limiting their appeal.
