Topman dominates trend-led young fashion, with all the season’s main looks and some more directional interpretations for bolder shoppers, such as a see-through version of the technical raincoat. There also seems to be a focus on interesting fabrics and unusual knit techniques, which lifts product beyond the basic printed T-shirts and shirts seen in most stores. Mannequins are some of the best, in well-styled and inspiring outfits placed right next to corresponding rails. Signs and eye-catching labels are helpful, while tags offer advice such as ‘This overshirt fit is boxy, wear as outer layer, buy your regular size’.
Customer service is a disappointment. A group of staff are having a meeting and don’t stop or greet me. Nor do they move out of the way so I can look around the area they are stood in. I hear one customer in the shoe department ask about clothing, and the assistant replies that they can’t offer any help because they work on footwear. Changing rooms are manned but an assistant says they can’t leave the area to retrieve a different size.
