Hit or miss: Wallis - 3/10

  • 532-534 Oxford Street

Wallis AW14

Pros

A few design details on Wallis products are interesting for autumn, such as a waterfall-lapel blazer with embellished cuffs for £40 (the same price as plain blazers in rival stores). Although product in general is uninspiring, the W Collection range has some watercolour prints that stand out on blouses for around £40 - however, the polyester fabric is no better quality than other mainstream stores. The friendly customer service was really its best attribute.

Cons

For a prominent Oxford Street store, the shopfit looks tired, which isn’t helped by its excessive crowding with rails. A messy Sale area is a total letdown. Some pieces on mannequins, such as a fake leather skirt, are nowhere to be seen in store and a lot of items, such as zebra-print tops or pink and black lace dresses, look outdated. In general the quality is poor, with some seriously thin stretchy trousers for £30 (Next offers tailored trousers in better fabrics for about £35) and shapeless jumpers for £35. The fact that so much was in Sale, even the new collection (with 20% off coats already on the day of visiting), suggests a lack of confidence in the range that is off-putting.
