Whistles is near the top for pricing, with most items at least £100. But there is a strong range of pieces with detail, such as tops with wrap elements or unique painterly prints. These add to the value as fabric quality is on a par with other stores. Given that Whistles shows at London Fashion Week, fashion-forward thinking is expected and it hits the mark. Great textures include heavy wool separates and fluffy knits, all of which are well presented in the small space, with only one or two items out at a time. Most of the sizing is around a medium, which does not alienate larger customers. Given the size of the store, there’s a lot of product but it doesn’t feel crowded. Everything is arranged by colour, with well-matched items such as jackets, trousers and tops presented together.
Customer service was a major let-down, with nobody asking if I required assistance, despite me being one of only two customers and holding around £500 worth of items. I felt actively ignored by at least three members of staff, who were tidying the store rather than engaging customers. There is also little to excite in terms of visual merchandising, which makes the store seem bland.
