Hit or miss: Whistles - 6/10

Pros

For a new range (Whistles’ menswear launched this season) there are some fun pieces, including slogan sweatshirts, which at £85 are a little steep but not out of the question. It’s all fairly young and colourful, with greys lifted by bright pinks and purples as well as some navy camo print. A boiled-wool bomber with a two-way zipper looks quite distinctive and has a good construction to justify its £295 price tag.

Cons

Compared with other stores, the range is a little too safe, without much of a signature. Some prices, such as a plain grey cashmere jumper for £195, can’t compete with Jaeger’s two-for-£250 offer, which has a wider colour range, and others, such as a plain black leather bomber for £395, just aren’t particularly exciting. There isn’t much of a full look as it’s mostly knits and sweaters. The men’s area does have its own entrance, but is hardly flagged up in the larger women’s store - in fact two women were browsing thinking it was womenswear - and it is also cramped.
