Hit or Miss: Womenswear Autumn 14

Our new and improved survey of retailers’ stores and collections kicks off this season with lots of plus points.

Womenswear Autumn 14

Drapers has refreshed its popular Hit or Miss series for autumn 14, but we are still comparing high street retailers for service, visual merchandising and value for money. Having added more subjects to our round-up, we have divided the shops into premium, mainstream, young fashion and value categories to compare like with like.

For this new and improved survey, Drapers examined womenswear stores around London’s Oxford Circus on October 8 and 9.

Of the autumn 14 trends, monochrome and bold shades of red and orange stand out, with outerwear and knits key pieces. Wrap coats, roll-neck sweaters and fake fur tick off the main directions. Some chains have interpreted the trends more appropriately than others, notably Monsoon, Marks & Spencer and Coast.

One of the less positive issues was poor customer service, which was especially notable this season given that many stores visited were flagships for the retailers. However, overall there were more plus points than negatives, which is an improvement on the womenswear surveys of the recent past.
