Faux leather-panelled knits, trophy jumpers with intricate beading, pretty, silky polyester blouses, the coolest printed trousers, gorgeous coats and peplum-a-plenty, Zara has nailed autumn 12’s trends. But its clever and sometimes subtle interpretations – an over-embellished product may have a muted colour palette – means its appeal stretches beyond the trend-hungry shopper, as was evident among the customer demographic in store.

The £39.99 price tag appears popular at Zara, with printed trousers, polyester blouses, a black lace dress, leopard-print peplum skirt and leopard-print and crocheted tops all sharing the same price – which seems fair. A jewel encrusted collar peplum top at £29.95 should prove popular with trend-led shoppers, while a great padded, flecked lambswool coat with leather sleeves is worth £139.99. A jacquard cream coat with peplum pockets at £79.99 is gorgeous but most styles were already fraying, which may discourage the more discerning shopper.

This is a tidy, well-merchandised store, which combines seasonal stories with product categorisation, while good use is made of mannequins to highlight trends. Compared with other stores in Watford, Zara had fewer size options and one customer was overheard telling her mother she should shop online at Zara, where there are more options.
