A family business since 1959, One Forty was given a makeover in 2004 by husband and wife Richard and Elaine Graham. The store’s eclectic range of products encompass menswear, womenswear and homeware, as well as a cafe and in-house florist.

Contemporary womenswear accounts for about half of the offer. With a range of price points - jackets range from less than £50 up to £1,100 - the store has increased footfall without alienating its previous customers.

This year, the Grahams plan to step up the store’s marketing with an email newsletter. Other initiatives have included ‘The Buyer’, a competition run in conjunction with a local radio station modelled on TV show The Apprentice. Six listeners worked in the store, with one fired each day until a winner was selected and invited along on a buying trip.
