Bibi branches out into menswear

Devon womenswear indie Bibi has branched into menswear in its third store to take advantage of a gap in the market for contemporary menswear brands in the county.

Bibi & Mac, which opened in Salcombe at the end of May, stocks contemporary menswear brands including American Vintage, Holland Esquire and Scotch & Soda. They sit alongside womenswear brands such as Odd Molly, Day Birger et Mikkelsen and Oakwood, which are also stocked in the other two Bibi stores.

Owner Jane McCoy, who founded the business in 2007, said: “Local retailers were only catering for older gentlemen and young surfers, and there was nothing in between.”

With sales up 50% year on year at the other two Bibi stores, McCoy said she was confident her brand choice for men would be right for the market.

At 668 sq ft, Bibi & Mac is the largest of the indie’s stores. It has two womenswear rooms and a back room for menswear. The first Bibi store to open was Bibi in Town in Kingsbridge, followed by Bibi by the Sea, also in Salcombe.

McCoy is planning to launch a transactional website later this year to cater for one of her core customer groups - city dwellers who visit Devon at weekends.

Following the web launch, McCoy is planning a menswear-only store and is looking for a city centre site in Exeter.
