Charlotte Wilkie co-owner of kidswear indie Charlie Barley in Brighton

Brands include Boboli, D&G Junior, Kidorable, Molo, No Added Sugar

How was trade over Christmas?

It wasn’t as bad as I feared. We’ve had a fairly tough year and November was particularly slow so I thought December would be too, but things picked up.

Did you alter your Sale period this year?

I normally go on Sale on December 27 but I brought it forward to mid-December because the high street did. However, I didn’t discount as heavily this year. In 2008 everyone was panicking about the recession and discounted hard.

Has the extreme weather affected trade?

Almost all stores in Brighton were closed during the really heavy snow. I had a few customers but most people stayed at home.

Overall, how is the kidswear market performing?

The likes of Next and Marks & Spencer have said kidswear is booming. But they are selling own-brand product so they can manufacture cheaply and keep margins huge. For the indies, on the branded side kidswear doesn’t have as big a mark-up as adults’ clothing.
