Drapers probe leading Independents to get their View from the Shop Floor

  • Fiona McGrath Owner of mainstream womenswear indie Papillon in Aberdeen
  • Brands include Betty Barclay, Dents, Joseph Ribkoff, Mexx, Ronen Chen, Vera Mont

How is business?

We’ve noticed a slowdown since the school holidays started. But there was a rush until the holidays.

How was your summer Sale?

I’m a believer in having a big Sale to get rid of stock. Right from the start we slash everything to 50% off.

A lot of people buy something in the Sale and get something from the new season collection too.

How are you handling the tough trading environment?

We know what customers have bought, so we email or ring them when something comes in that we know they’ll love. We encourage them to buy a couple of pieces to update looks they have rather than invest in whole outfits.

Who do you cater for?

The 30-plus market. It struck me that there were no boutiques in Aberdeen for women my age.

Do you hold any in-store events?

I have Ribkoff Days, at which a size 14 model shows new Joseph Ribkoff styles. There are drinks and nibbles, everybody gets 15% off the brand that day.
