Indies bank on outerwear to be top autumn 11 performer

Indies are buying more outerwear for autumn 11 compared with last year, particularly parkas, fur and duffle coats, after a bitter autumn 10 caused sales of the category to soar.

Some 90% of menswear indies polled by Drapers said they had upped their outerwear budget and 50% of womenswear indies said they would stock more coats this year.

Chris Huggett, managing director of premium menswear indie Ibson in Stamford, Lincolnshire, said he was buying about 12% more outerwear than last autumn. “I think it’s about getting them in a little bit earlier as I think winters are going to get longer.”

Huggett added that he was buying longer variations of the pea coat with added shoulder detailing and contrasting fabrics.

Pamela Shiffer, owner of womenswear indie Pamela Shiffer in Primrose Hill, north London, said: “I think the parka is still very strong.” She said she would also be buying long evening coats to provide smarter outerwear options.
