John Goodridge in Farnham

Chosen by Leon Soulsby, UK brand manager at menswear brand Without Prejudice

John Goodridge was founded in 1927 but under third-generation owner Bob Goodridge it is up to date for 2011. He has overhauled the offer, transforming the store from a classic men’s outfitters into a modern and stylish independent.

Bob is fizzing with enthusiasm, ideas and knowledge. He always knows the trends that will be appearing and, crucially, when to step away from them.

The store has an incredible window space, creating the most eye-catching and inspiring displays that stop passers-by in their tracks.

And while other indies have played safe in the recession, Bob has taken risks and moved his business on. He converted his tailoring department to a Without Prejudice shop-in-shop and backed brands such as Hackett and Tommy Hilfiger, which now have a devoted following among his growing customer base.

But perhaps the staff are the best testament to Bob because they work as if it was their name above the door, which is essential for a successful independent.
