Men’s lifestyle brand Melka is close to handing control of its UK and international design, sales and marketing operations to a licensee, in a bid to drive its expansion plans.
Melka executive director Andrew Thomson said to develop the business, which currently manages its design, sales and marketing in-house, it needed investment from a licensee. However, he would not be drawn on the level of funding a licensee would provide.
Thomson said Melka owner The Baird Group, which bought the brand in 2007, was days away from finalising a deal with a licensee that has an established wholesale business. He refused to name the licensee.
He added that under the new licensee Melka’s wholesale business could be expanded into markets including the US, Europe and Russia.
The licensee would also run Melka’s online store. Thomson said there would be one or two redundancies at the business.
Melka has about 200 stockists in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
