Northern Threads in South Shields

Chosen by Tom Peckett, UK sales manager at raincoat brand Stone-Dri

Based in South Shields, Northern Threads was founded in September 2006 by Nigel Binnie and Phil Goodfellow. After working in retail for many years, the duo decided to set up their own indie with a forward-thinking concept.

Northern Threads really understands the South Shields customer, and by combining its brands – such as Barbour and Original Penguin – with its experience, the Northern Threads customer knows that when they shop there, the brand mix is bought with them in mind and priced accordingly.

At a time when indies are still struggling, Northern Threads is driving forward by buying into a deeper brand mix and branching out into a transactional website.

The success of Northern Threads is owed to Phil and Nigel being hands on in their approach, from the buying to the development of the shop. They have created an indie that raises the bar for indies in UK towns.
