Oi Polloi in Manchester

Chosen by Fergus Patterson, managing director of British knitwear brand Wolsey

Oi Polloi is an indie I always try to get to when I’m in Manchester. It stocks a good mix of on-trend contemporary and heritage menswear brands, has informative staff, yet has an informal feel.

There was a memorable denim display in the store on my last visit in the summer. Rows of jeans, including my favourite brand Nudie, took centre stage and were surrounded by more traditional brands such as Barbour and Mackintosh.

Oi Polloi has a wonderful mixture and wide selection of clothes and footwear. It’s one of the only places I know that sells Nigel Cabourn, an incredibly interesting British designer who produces modern pieces with a vintage twist.

Staff are knowledgeable and don’t pounce on customers desperate to make a sale. This passion for the product comes across on its website, which gives a brief history of all the brands. In turn, this creates a story about the clothes and ensures there is emotion behind them.
