Q&A: Ritchie Chan

WGSN talks to Ritchie Chan, founder and head buyer of Triple Major, a multi-label boutique and exhibition space in Beijing

What is the concept behind Triple Major?

Triple Major started as a creative studio in Los Angeles that organised global projects inviting artists and designers to showcase their work. One of the biggest projects we did was Project White T-shirt, where we invited fashion designers from across the world to reinvent the white T-shirt. The pieces were exhibited in LA, then in Tokyo. After, we were invited by the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing to re-exhibit

the project. While we were in Beijing, we realised there weren’t really a lot of stores where avant-garde fashion is carried. So we decided to open a store.

What kind of consumers do you attract?

Mostly other young people involved in the art and fashion scene.

How do you approach your buying?

Quite honestly, about 90% of the brands and pieces I purchase will be because I personally like them. Everything I stock, I would wear myself.

How important is the pricing?

The average price of pieces is about US$300 (£186).

There are of course some people who would not spend that much on clothes, but my customers will easily pay that price.

How is the fashion retail landscape evolving across China?

It’s getting more diverse. It’s similar to Hong Kong 10 years ago. Now, people have more choice. There are people who still don’t care about fashion. Then there are those that shop at fast-fashion stores and a growing number who appreciate high fashion.
