The organisers of Independents’ Day have announced a wave of activity to support this year’s event.
Organised by Skillsmart, Independents’ Day is designed to celebrate indies across the UK and raise awareness of their contribution to the high street and local communities.
Held on July 4, Skillsmart said there will be a wide range of activities and special promotions across UK towns as well as themed window displays, high street festivities, competitions and offers.
In Devonshire Quarter in Sheffield, independent retailers are planning a ‘match any offer’ day. Customers are invited to bring-in discount vouchers from a different shop and the local retailers will try to match it.
Independent businesses in Ely, Cambridgeshire will take over Ely Market Place on July 4 and distribute samples, promote special offers and raise awareness of their businesses.
Meanwhile in London, Waterloo Quarter will roll out a new website to celebrate independents locally.
Helen Santer, director of operations at Waterloo Quarter, said a range of activities will take place in Waterloo across a wide range of independent businesses.
She said: “From themed market stalls to a knitting class and a barbecue, there will be something for everyone. We are calling on local people to show their support for the wealth of different independent retailers that we have in Waterloo.”
Last year the organisers were criticised for not promoting the event enough.
