Zapatos in Knutsford, Cheshire

Chosen by Karl Vanderhuizen, northern Europe sales manager, Emu Australia

Zapatos is a beautifully furnished boutique that was established four years ago by mother and daughter Sandra Gough and Sally Feeke. They felt there was a gap in the market for a local women’s designer footwear boutique offering British brands and some global designers.

The store has a premium feel and a clean layout, with product merchandised by brand. It was one of the first indies to buy into Rupert Sanderson in January 2007 - the exceptionally talented London-based footwear designer who today operates on a global platform - along with pieces from the Philip Treacy hat and handbag collection.

Zapatos also offers footwear and accessories from D&G, Vic Matie, Penelope and Parker, as well as Emu Australia. Combine this with knowledgeable staff and you get a truly fine indie that has carved out a successful business in what has been a hard time for small retailers. It’s a great model for anybody considering entering the lucrative but risky fashion business.
