Matalan presents a multi-brand image with 24:7 Jeff Banks its clean-lined, contemporary offer. Highlights include military style shirts with epaulette details, narrow pinstripe trousers with waisted change pockets. Denim 73’s young fashion offer includes excellent washed out T-shirts with colourful b-movie horror prints and a large denim offer includes styles from Lee Cooper, Lee, and Easy.
Merchandised by brand, the front two-thirds of the store is dedicated to the under 25’s market and as such is dominated by T-shirts, shirts, lightweight knits, jeans and accessories from messenger bags to canvas plimsolls. The offer becomes progressively older walking into the store with both the Wolsey and Lee brand setting out cargo shorts alongside various utility blousons.
The vast ground floor menswear section is let down by poor lighting and a lack of retail theatre. More could be done from a visual merchandising perspective to underline each sub-brand’s distinct personalities. A densely merchandised store means a lack of mannequins which is a shame considering the quality of some champion styles.
A strong price-led offer means plenty of bargains, from £8 collegiate print polo shirts to £14 crinkle-wash checked short sleeved shirts. Hawaiian print shirts are £8, fine striped cardies are £16, and jeans range from £6 to £28 with Lee sitting at the top of the price architecture. Taylor & Wright suits weigh in at £40.
