Fashion leads strong performance at John Lewis

Department store chain John Lewis recorded strong fashion sales growth in the week to October 2 with kidswear, knitwear and outerwear performing strongly.

John Lewis sales were up 13.9% year-on-year and 21.1% compared to the same week two years ago. Online sales were up 57%, with a robust performance from sale-or-return brands and women’s footwear.

The retailer’s stores in Oxford Street in London and in Cambridge were the best performers, with the former recording a successful launch of its new fashion floor, particularly in women’s footwear and accessories.

Fashion sales increased by 17% over the week, with kidswear sales up 37%. The retailer added that knitwear and outerwear were also strong, where the new season’s lines had started strongly.

However nine stores experienced sales declines, and Singer analyst Mark Photiades warned “the comparatives start to toughen significantly over the coming weeks.”
