Fashion leads the way in better week for John Lewis

A strong performance from fashion helped John Lewis to a solid week’s trading in the week to May 21.

Fashion sales rose 11.5% during the week, with women’s brands up 21.8%, handbags up 19.3%, men’s formalwear up 26.8% and men’s accessories up 21.9%. Men’s footwear and brand casuals saw a strong increase, up 16% and 12.1% respectively.

Online sales were up 28.3%, and womenswear sales on the web doubled on last year.

Total sales at the department store jumped 3.2% excluding VAT to £53.3m, or 5.3% once VAT is taken into account.

Among the branches, Trafford was top performer with sales up 11.6%, and Cribbs Causeway, Peter Jones, Glasgow and Edinburgh also showing decent increases. However sales still fell in most branches.
