Fashion outperforms at John Lewis

Fashion was once again the strongest performing category at department store chain John Lewis last week with a 13.6% year-on-year rise in sales

New fashion stock coming into store was up 30% on average across men’s, women’s and kidswear for the week to Friday July 10.

The retailer said its Back To School range also started well, especially on shoes which were up 58%.

Total sales across all categories at the store group rose 9.1% last week to £59.2m as its Sale drew shoppers.

Johnlewis.com sales surged 44.7% against weaker comparisons last year before the September 2009 relaunch.

John Lewis Region A selling operations director Nat Wakely said the clearance period is nearing its end, “hopefully with a strong final flourish as we look ahead to the back to school season and exciting new lines flowing in as we approach the second half of our financial year.”
