John Lewis said that a strong performance from fashion drove sales across the department store chain and that the retailer was finishing its financial year with a “flourish”.
John Lewis said fashion sales rose 19% in the week to January 16 against the same period last year. It added that almost every category posted a double-digit rise. Women’s outerwear was particularly strong during the week, with sales up 44%.
Total sales at the retailer rose 11.1% to £53.58m during the week.
John Lewis director of operational development Andrew Murphy said snow influenced the total sales performance “but did not dominate”. He said John Lewis benefited from “pent-up demand” from consumers, culminating in a “great day’s trade on Saturday”.
