Fashion sales at department store John Lewis dropped 0.2% in the week to February 19, although online fashion sales soared.
The department store’s performance was impacted by the fall of half term, which was one week later this year than the year before when sales soared 13.6%.
The best of the sales performance came from beauty and jewellery, which benefitted from the fall of Valentine’s Day on the Monday.
Menswear and swimwear performed well but the performance from kidswear was weaker. However, the retailer said that the category was set to benefit in the current week as footfall improved during half term.
Fashion sales on johnlewis.com jumped 50% and overall online sales were up 26.7%.
In Scotland, half term fell in the same week as last year and therefore the department store chain recorded stronger results there, with Glasgow up 5.5%, Aberdeen up 4% and Edinburgh up 1.6%.
Total sales at John Lewis dropped by 0.4% to £51.2m during the week.
