Fashion sales up 3.5% by value in April

Clothing and footwear sales rose 3.5% in terms of value in April, the highest month-on-month increase since May 2008.

Clothing and footwear sales by volume were up 2% month on month according to the Office for National Statistics.

Year-on-year clothing and footwear sales were up 9.5% in volumes and 9.4% in value.

The value of retail sales across all sectors rose 1.1% by value and 0.3% by volume month on month in April. Year on year, the increases were 4.8% and 1.8% respectively.

Excluding automotive fuel, the month-on-month increases were 0.6% by value and 0.1% by volume. Year on year they were 4.2% and 3%.

Prices in April are estimated to have risen by 2.8% compared to the same month in 2009, the ONS said.
