High Street Hit or Miss: Footasylum 6/10

Adidas from Footasylum

Adidas from Footasylum

Adidas from Footasylum

Footwear specialist - Westfield Stratford, Ground floor

Pros

Footasylum has a much more interesting shopfit than its closest competitor, Footlocker. The design, featuring various outdoor elements such as wood panelling and exposed brickwork, works well with the tagline “The Original Trailblazer” in the window. The store is quite dark, but industrial-style spotlights are used to highlight the product well and neon tube lighting directs customers to the till and fitting rooms. Brands such as Adidas, Nike and Asics are well represented, but there are also more unusual labels such as Creative Recreation, which has trainers from £74.99 to £84.99 and provides a point of difference.

Cons

Footwear only makes up around half of the store, with clothing making up the rest, so you may be disappointed if you expect an emporium dedicated to shoes. Staff smile as I enter, but no one goes out of their way to help. Although there is a section for women’s product, it is small and the overall feel of the store could be quite alienating to female shoppers because of its primarily masculine styling.
