High Street Hit or Miss: Marks & Spencer 6/10

Ms jpg

Marks & Spencer autumn 15

Mainstream - Westfield Stratford, first floor

Pros

The building blocks are here for a strong season with a solid collection of appealing items. The store is pleasant with sleek fixtures clearly segmenting the different areas (the Savile Row suiting area certainly lends a premium feel), although many rails are too tightly packed. It has one of the best price architectures and a good mix of sizes (30- to 42-inch waists). Tailoring is strong; separate rails feature a fully merchandised suit and tie outfit with each item hung side by side. A slim navy suit is great value at just £129.

Cons

While the price architecture is good, the product could be better organised. For example, I spotted jeans for £19.50, £29.99, £39.99 and £45 all mixed together. Though effort goes into explaining why the premium pieces cost more (such as cashmere blends or British fabrics), it’s hard to know how to pick between the medium and lower-priced pieces as they look and feel the same.
