High Street Hit or Miss: Marks & Spencer 7/10

M&S autumn 15 new

M&S autumn 15 new

Mainstream- Westfield, Stratford, ground floor

Pros

The welcoming window features caramel and gold hues from Marks & Spencer’s coat and cashmere collection. The retailer is focusing on its cashmere offer, and at the front of the shop a placard promotes “The Art of Cashmere”, surrounded by jumpers and cardigans in a range of colours. This makes the collection easy to spot and shop, although it is pricey. Mannequins throughout the shop offer inspiration for outfit building. Tables of accessories in branded areas show customers how to combine products. There is a good mix of sizes on display. The shop is easy to navigate as product is grouped by category.

Cons

A cashmere jumper at £100 is more expensive than Uniqlo’s at £70. M&S’s fake fur coat is £85, while Next’s is £75. Some of the product felt too young for the core M&S shopper – for example, the silver-sequined miniskirt placed at the entrance.
