High Street Hit or Miss: Next 7/10

Mainstream - Westfield Stratford, first floor

Pros

Suiting is very strong with a really good range. Flecked wools, checks and pinstripes feature alongside a host of colours, offering something different to competitors but at good and varied price points (from £89 to £140). Almost everything comes as a three-piece suit option, which is good and unique. Like M&S, Next produces many variations on a key item, but they do seem more differentiated here. For instance, there are more than 10 styles of multi-pocket military jacket (quilted, waxed, dark, light, minimal or full of extra design details, ranging from £48 to £80). The retailer also gets extra points for doing something a bit different with its window displays, as the wintry woodland theme stands out.

Cons

Points, however, are lost as the menswear area looks drab and the first product that customers see is a boring rail of dark jeans and basic knits. All rails are the same mid-height, so nothing catches the eye apart from one raised mannequin. It also feels cramped with not a lot of space among some rails.
