John Lewis appoints director of retail operations

John Lewis has promoted Andrew Murphy to director of retail operations.

Murphy, currently director of operational development, will take up the board level role on March 29 and will answer in to managing director Andy Street. It follows the departure of former John Lewis retail director Gareth Thomas in January to take early retirement.

Thomas’ responsibilities will revert to two roles – the retail operations director and another, as yet undisclosed, directorship.

Murphy will be responsible for all aspects of the department store’s high street selling operations.

Street said: “Andrew brings nearly two decades of retailing experience and is perfectly placed to ensure our shops continue to deliver the excellent standards and service that our customers expect, both now and in the future.”

Murphy said: “I am really excited about this new opportunity. Our shops have traded extremely well through Christmas and I am thrilled to be responsible for building on this success and delivering the business’ ambitious growth plans.”
