John Lewis breaks records again

John Lewis has continued its run of strong sales to notch up another record week.

In the week to Saturday December 12, sales at John Lewis hit £110m, the most the department store has ever taken in a week.

The figure is an 8% rise on John Lewis’ biggest week in 2007 and a 15% uplift on the same week last year.

John Lewis said records were seen across a number of branches and took the most for a single week.

Fashion brands, watches, sewing machines and gifts drove the performance as customers bought presents for the family.

John Lewis said that men were being more organised in shopping for Christmas this year with beauty, jewellery and lingerie starting to peak early.

John Lewis director of operational development Andrew Murphy said: “It is very exciting to be breaking records week after week. This would not be possible without all of the hard work our partners continue to put in to deliver the levels of service our customers rightly expect from us. The atmosphere in our branches is very festive as across the country people are out Christmas shopping, even men, although I am sure there will still be many who leave it until the last minute.”
